  3. money to finance its balance of payments
  4. deficit. Originally, the SDR was linked to
  5. gold and the US dollar. After 1974 SDRs were
  6. defined in terms of a `basket' of the 16
  7. currencies of countries doing 1% or more of
  8. the world's trade. In 1981 the SDR was
  9. simplified to a weighted average of US
  10. dollars, French francs, German marks,
  11. Japanese yen and UK sterling.
